THRESHOLD INTEGRATES BEHAVIORAL AND BIOMEDICAL APPROACHES

Threshold Center is distinct because it combines medical, dental and behavior analytic approaches to autistic spectrum disorders. By combining pediatrics and internal medicine with current behavior analysis techniques we can arrive at more complete explanations and solutions of the behavioral impairments. Threshold's goal is to use this knowledge to reduce the impact of various impairments that affect children and adults with developmental disabilities.

Developmental disorders require a team approach and that team must be lead by medical health care professionals. In support of the medical mission are a variety of programs designed to recognize the presenting needs of the patient. Clearly the literature supports that applied behavioral treatments have the best success in many cases, however a medical cause for behavior must always be ruled out.

The literature also supports that children must have around 40 hours of behavioral training per week. This is a cost prohibitive regimen for parents of modest means. Threshold is working on ways to ensure that parents and others supporting the needs of these children have access to and are appropriately supported in their training. We have partnered with the Harrington Group to develop and field a simulation training program that is readily available and affordable. Through simulation training we are confident that parents and support staff can meet or exceed the skills of most behavior trainers.

Threshold also offers a variety training programs for parents and others interested in working with developmentally affected children. Our goal is to ensure that this community and parents never have to feel that they were inadequate to meet the physical needs of these children.
