There is so much to know, so much love to give
Autism is a developmental disability that makes social interaction and communication difficult; it has many symptoms and the major ones are the restricted and repetitive behavior, difficulty in communication with the outside world and withdrawal into one’s own world. Parents usually notice signs in the first two years of their child’s life. The cause of autism is not yet identified; nevertheless, multiple theories exist. Some believe that autism is a condition rather than a disorder while others are seeking a medical cure. However, an individual with autism can be treated and, with the help of professionals, can make progress in many areas of everyday life.
Children with autism experience the world differently than others. It is not easy for them to talk to others, express themselves or understand other’s language and emotions. Ordinary sounds and human touch may upset them. They may act in unusual ways, dislike changes in their routine and need help to make sense of the world around them.
Early intervention is the key piece to the puzzle of autism and may help children gain communication, self-care and social skills. An individual with severe autism will always need support. With milder autism, adults are able to live on their own. The earlier a child begins autism intervention program, the better. Every child with autism has a greater chance of having a brighter future with the proper interventions and help from trained professionals.
Threshold offers a complete system of care, in essence a one-stop-shop, for parents questioning whether their child could have autistic tendencies. Over more than forty years we have developed programs that combine early diagnosis and medical intervention with applied behavioral programs, family counseling and support services and more.
Threshold was founded because Teena Willard recognized that her son had problems. Ben was less than a year old. When she asked what was available she was told to put him away... nothing could be done for him. Every parent of a disabled child will want to know what is available to help their child. When the disability is completely disabling, as is the case with Ben, then they want to know what's going to happen when they are gone.
Threshold was founded to answer those questions and while we offer a broad spectrum of services for a broad spectrum of needs, we will continue to follow the direction of our original Board of Trustees and Founder and "take the children that no one else wants to take". Today our "children" range in age from three to forty-four. Our service capabilities range from children and adults with minimal behavioral involvement to those with extreme behavioral and learning issues.
If you wonder whether Threshold is the right place for your child or "adult child", please contact us. If you need a medical or behavioral assessment because of concerns about your child please call us. Behavioral intervention causes no harm... waiting to see if your child will "catch up" may be harmful.
